Freestone, CA— Wild Flour, Meeting Point for Bread and Scone Gourmands
Which is your addiction? Sticky buns? Goat flatbread? The Meyer lemon scones, the savory scones full of cheese bits, bacon, and green onions, or perhaps the triple chocolate version, all made with whipping cream? And what do you prefer to take home, the savory breads, the rye, or maybe the traditional French round peasant loaves? Roasted garlic loaves are heavenly, when available—be sure to pick one up!
Wild Flour is a gathering place for some of the most interesting inhabitants of Northern California. When consuming a delectable treat at the bakery, one can sit outside and enjoy the view or sit inside at the large rectangular table where a lively conversation seems almost always underway. If you can hear, of course, with dozens of people standing in line to pick their treats! And not to mention the free-spirited toddlers whose hippie grandparents give them the run of the place!
We have met winemakers, artists, playwrights, musicians, composers, filmmakers, brewers, marketing experts, realtors, investors, prison guards, database gurus, dairymen, farm wives, fishermen, just to mention a few. Everyone has a story, usually starting with a favorite bakery product and ending with words on what is important to them in today’s world.
“We live in Baltimore but we come here whenever we visit my mother-in-law.” “It has become a monthly pilgrimage, 200 miles round trip and very enjoyable. Not to mention delicious.” “We can’t get baked goods like this in Northern Florida so I come whenever I have a business trip to San Francisco.” “We live nearby so we get to visit often. All of our visiting friends come here.” “You don’t find scones like these in …Holland, the Philippines, Germany, France, …”
When you find yourself north of San Francisco on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, head over to Freestone on the 140 Bohemian Highway, 5-6 miles West of Sebastapol. Owner Jed Wallach is a gifted baker and one of the nicest people you will meet in the area. He has assembled a crew of talented and enthusiastic folks. (Be sure to notice that it is him in the poster hanging on the wall to the left of the counter.)
