FRANCE – Festival du Beaujolais
The third Thursday in November is a day for celebration in France: the release of the new, young Beaujolais Nouveau or Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau. Fermented only 6-8 weeks from the Gamay grape cultivated in the Beaujolais region of France, the date is always a time for celebration. Less strictly controlled than in the past, the new wine goes on sale at 12:01 AM on that third Thursday. It is generally available around the world.
Because it is so young, the wine has almost no tannin, so no bitterness, but rather a fruity flavor. Rather than pairing with heavy proteins, as done with a tannic red wine, Beaujolais Nouveau is an excellent accompaniment to cheeses and lighter proteins such as chicken. In the USA, it arrives a week before Thanksgiving and becomes a perfect match with a turkey dinner.
Enjoy! “A votre santé.” “To your health!” “Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé.” “The new Beaujolais is here!”
